Game Day Preview (Abbreviated) - Kitties vs Bears

Written by Jon on .

Occasionally there are days when the entire Days of Y'Orr staff is busy for some reason and previews slip through the cracks. Today was one of those days.

Justin was busy covering the Shaq - Islanders situation. Greg was busy doing awesome rants about how ridiculous the NHL All-star game festitivies and Guardian project are. Robb was still mourning for Marc Savard. Jon was following Patrice Purrgeron and Nathan Horton around making sure Purrgeron didn't get into any trouble while helping Horton regain his confidence (story coming tomorrow).

Quick notes for the game:

In case you have forgotten (and we're sure you'll be reminded a lot) Dennis Wideman is still on the Panthers. Don't boo him too bad. Being on the Panthers sucks enough.

Former Bruin Willie O'Ree will be part of a ceremonial puck drop tonight. O'Ree, the NHL's first African American player, is also participating in the "Hockey is for Everyone" event.

Here's some links you should enjoy:

Kirk Luedeke has Bruins prospects and 2011 NHL draft prospects covered.

Grinding Gears: "Old School" not cool for NHL All-Star Game

Written by Greg on .

Old School not cool for NHL All-Star Game

Welcome to Grinding Gears. Last week Angry Bruins Fan, Greg, went on a rant about the Bruins "power play." This week, Greg talks about the NHL All-Star game entertainment and the NHL Guardians.

For more Greg, follow him on Twitter @Pez5611 and read this other blog, Angry Bruins Fan.

The more I hear about the NHL All-Star Game, the more I believe that the NHL is out of touch with their fan base. On Monday, news broke out that Clay Aiken will be singing the National Anthem in Carolina at the game. Seriously?

To piggy back off of this news, the NHL announced that 3 Doors Down will be playing during the first intermission and the NHL Guardian project will happen during the second intermission.

What the fuck?

The NHL believes that Clay Aiken, 3 Doors Down and some Stan Lee throwaways will carry a game that no one cares about to begin with? Sorry NHL, but I've had enough. Lets start out with Clay Aiken. His sexual preference aside, Clay Aiken may be the worst fucking choice for a singer in the history of choosing singers. Was BBMak not avail? Did 98 Degrees not call you back, NHL? How relevant has Clay Aiken been on the music scene? Oh, he won American Idol 2 back in 2003, when I was 20 fucking years old. Where is the relevancy seven years later? I want someone out there to name three songs he has produced in his entire music career, let alone in the past twelve months. YOU CAN'T!

Now I know you're probably reading this saying "Well Greg, it is only the National Anthem" but it's about putting asses in the seats and eyes on the television. The NBA is getting Christina Aguilera to sing the National Anthem at the NBA Finals and although there is no word yet on the NBA All-Star Game singer, I bet it will be relevant. Aguilera puts asses in the seats and eyes on the TV, Clay Aiken doesn't.

More Grinding Gears after the jump...

Bruins, Shaq agree to one-year deal; claimed off waivers by Isles

Written by Justin on .

Big news broke this morning for Boston Bruins and New York Islanders fans.

Boston Celtics and NBA star Shaquille O'Neal signed a one-year deal with the Boston Bruins last night. The deal is reported to be an estimate of $600,000, plus incentives.

Shaq was not pleased by the Islanders's claim.

"This is bullshit," said Shaq in a phone interview. "I'm not going to report. I'm not reporting. I had my heart set in Boston. I already play in Boston for the Celtics. Why would I want to play for a joke organization like the Islanders? Plus, that commute would suck."

Islander's GM "Party On" Garth Snow said he's excited to add another high caliber player to an already saturated roster.

"We're very excited to have Shaq on our squad," Snow said. "He's a big man. He's got a large frame. He can cover a lot of the net. He also has several championship rings, so he knows what it's like to play under pressure."

When asked about the chances of the Islanders making it to the post-season this year, Snow replied with a "Go fuck yourself."

The latest Islanders waiver claim means New York has set the record for most goalies on an NHL roster... ever. However, only one of their four goalies is even able to start. New York also has whatever's left of Rick DiPietro's body and some no-name in Kevin Poulin. They also recently picked up FA Evgeni Nabokov from waivers after he signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings. He, too, is refusing to report to the Islanders.

"We're hoping there'll be some friendly competition between all our netminders," Snow said. "We've already ordered Shaq an XXXXL and super-tall jersey for the Big Shamrock. In fact, I've officially placed Travis Harmonic on waivers, so Shaq can continue to wear #36. Harmonic has been a waste of a roster space anyways."

Shaq was seen at the Boston Garden this morning, but failed to answer reporter's questions.

Phone calls to Shaq's agent this morning on whether or not Shaq really will refuse to report to New York have gone unanswered. Add a comment

Round Table: Should Marc Savard retire?

Written by Justin on .

Round Table: Should Marc Savard Retire?Welcome to the Days of Y'Orr Round Table discussion. This is a new, semi-regular feature we're going to try out in which the DOY crew discuss important -- and sometimes trivial -- matters of hockey.

This first edition of the DOY Round Table discusses whether or not Marc Savard, after receiving his fourth concussion and second in 10 months, should hang up his skates and retire. Leave your thoughts in the comment section.

Robb: I should probably preface this by saying that I like Savard, he's a great player and has been a crucial player for our team over the years, and a big part of its successes. I'd like nothing more than to see him lace up the skates after recovering from his second concussion in less than a year and return to form…but that being said, yes, he probably should retire. Comparisons to Bergeron have been flying around, and sure the situations are similar, but something to bear in mind is that Savvy is about 10 years older than Bergeron was at the time, I’m no doctor but that has to have some impact. Bergeron seemed to have an easier time bouncing back as well, whether that has to do more with strength of will or strength of head is anyone’s guess. Savard could be heading for disaster if he attempts another come back (see what I did there). For his safety, I think he should consider hanging it up.

Greg: I think it's time for Marc Savard to consider hanging up the skates. He's over 30, he's had multiple concussions in his career and he's had two over the past ten months. When Patrice Bergeron had his concussions, he was 23/24 and still young enough where his body can heal. Once you get in to the older years of your career and your body is getting older, things like this take more of a toll. Look at Eric Lindros or former Patriot Teddy Johnson. They're dealing with post-concussion symptoms after their career. Is it worth dealing with this to play a game?

Justin: He'll probable think about. how can he not? But it probably won't be a decision he'll make anytime soon. Not until he's feeling better and -- for lack of better phrasing -- can think straight. At this point he might want to just pack it in and call it a season, though. It'll give him the rest of the season and all summer to heal, condition and see how he feels and if he wants to risk a fifth concussion.

I'd love to see him back but I'd love for him to not end his days as a vegetable.

Side note: all those blaming Savard for getting these concussion -- you're a fucking moron. Suck it.

Jon:

It is hard to say really considering we don’t quite know what is really going on with Savard. Only he knows.

I think this is one of those situations where you can’t look at it as a fan. As a fan, you want to see him on the ice, you want to see him back to being the player he used to be and helping the Bruins.

But Savard has a family. Another concussion has the potential to really debilitate him. I’m sure Savard doesn’t want his kids growing up with a dad who can’t really do anything with them.

His previous concussion obviously took a heavy physical and emotional toll on the guy, and that can’t be overlooked. He seemed to know right away what happened against Colorado. You could see the look on his face. If he does come back there’s the chance he’s going to constantly worry about when the next hit is going to come and mentally that is no way to go about your profession.
There’s arguments on both sides.

You have guys like Eric Lindros who kept getting nailed in the head, kept playing, kept declining and were eventually forced to retire.

Then you have guys like Patrice Bergeron who took a full season to recover, came back, got hit and concussed again, but then came back just fine. Bergeron is just now getting his stride back. And maybe that is the difference… Bergeron is young. Savard is 33.

Does Savard want to keep going through this? What if he gets hit again? I think Savard has to at least consider the option. But that is the hardest part for an athlete. Us regular folks leave our jobs, we go get another in the industry or something.

For athletes, they train their whole lives to get to where they are. Suddenly not being able to do that anymore, or just leaving the game, has to eat at them. In the end that could be what makes Savard stick around.

But who knows. Maybe we’re all just blabbing for nothing and Savard ends up fine.

Purrgeron: Shut him down for the season. Does that suck for the Bruins? Yes, but this ain’t about the Bruins bitches.

Savard wasn’t the same player. That much was obvious despite his recent “turnaround.” He was hesitant, perhaps in his own head too much. That is only going to get worse now. He’s going to be looking over his shoulder, maybe putting himself in more vulnerable positions in reaction to avoiding hits. Shut him down, let him really get 100% and weigh his options.

You can’t ask a player if they are healthy. They always want to go. Savard’s health isn’t worth a few extra points in the standings. The popular opinion seems to be “wait and see” how Savard feels and go from there but Savard felt “good” enough to play against Philly last year, and how’d that turn out for him?

Quick and Thomas Duel While Kings Handle Bruins.

Written by Jon on .

So ummm.... that Jonathan Quick guy is pretty darn good. Killed the Bruins again.

Quick and Thomas were hands down the stars of this game. Thomas kept the Bruins in the game but the Bruins just couldn't get anything past Quick. If the Bruins make it to the Cup Finals hopefully they don't face the Kings. Five game losing streak to the Kings now.

Kings just outclassed the Bruins tonight. Dustin Brown was killing EVERYTHING that came near him. Good, hard, clean hits. Would love to see him on the Bruins. The Bruins just never had an answer for the Kings pressure of physicality. Thomas got to see how Rask feels every time he starts. Oh well. On to the next game.

After the jump.... Quick and Thomas are pretty awesome.......

Another concussion for Marc Savard

Written by Justin on .

Well shit. Marc Savard has been diagnosed with another concussion -- this one on the "moderate" level.

Statement from Chiarelli:

"After being examined by the Bruins medical staff today, Marc has been diagnosed with a moderate concussion. There is no timetable on his return and no further updates at this time."

Forget what it means to the Boston Bruins for a second; this absolutely blows for Marc Savard. Poor guy got his head basically chopped off from Cooke, came back (albeit a bit early) for the Flyers playoff game, suffered post-concussion syndrome during the summer which kept him out for portion of the year, he comes back and is just now getting into a groove and bam he gets hit with another concussion -- from fucking Matt "Where's the Spleen" Hunwick of all people.

Savard's gotta be beside himself at this point.

Least he has Bergeron to help him through it.

“It was more of a here-we-go-again type of feeling,’’ Bergeron said of his second concussion. “ ‘Am I OK? Am I going to be OK?’ But two, three, four days after, I realized that it wasn’t even close to the one before. It gave me some hope. I was positive after that. But the first couple days, I was like, ‘Oh my God, am I going to go through this all over again?’ It was more that feeling than the symptoms. The symptoms were there, but it wasn’t as hard. It wasn’t as big. It was more my spirit that was hurt more than anything else.’’

“I felt like I was getting back on track a little bit,’’ said Bergeron. “I was feeling better. As a player, you obviously want to get back to where you were before right away. It took me some time. I was pushing and pushing and I felt like I was there. It happened again, so it was hard. I don’t know what the situation is with Savvy. But for myself, it was hard to take. But after a couple days, I was positive, took some time to heal, and bounced back.’’

Rough stuff. Hopefully Savard can take solace in that Bergeron was able to overcome a second concussion. Add a comment

Game Day Preview: Bruins After Dark

Written by Robb on .

Tonight the Bruins travel to Los Angeles to take on the Kings in one of their yearly nighttime game, something we're not too pleased about.  While blogging is a lucrative industry, the DOY staff still has day jobs...you know, so we don't lose touch with the commoners of the world.  Chances are we'll either be napping later today, or just tough it out and suffer tomorrow.

God damn we hate 10:30 weeknight games...

It's hard for us to crack wise about the Kings, truth be told we kinda like them, or more specifically, certain players on the team.  We have fantasies of Dustin Brown and Drew Doughty coming to the Bruins, and there are some other players we enjoy as well...

...except Ryan Smyth, fuck him!

After the jump, more Kings than you can shake a stick at!

Horton Watch 2011

Written by Justin on .

We've been holding off on doing something like this with Nathan Horton for a few reason:

1) We didn't think it'd last this long.
2) We kinda like Horton. We're seeing the effort but no follow through. Guy must've kicked a puppy or something to get this streak of luck.

But he's gone 21 days without a goal and our fantasy hockey teams have suffered for it. He has 1 goal and 2 assists in January (last goal vs. Toronto). Therefore -- and with the help from our good friend Brian Fantana -- we're introducing Horton Watch 2011

Stay tuned between periods in our game recaps to get Fantana's take on Horton's goalless streak.  Add a comment

Apparently Tim Connolly is just like Charlie Sheen

Yahoo! Sports/Rotowire.com strikes again with yet another hilarious fantasy hockey player update.

Wow and ouch. Seems a bit harsh but photographic evidence proves Yahoo!/Rotowire's point.

What a dog.

Side note - The above original photograph is about too much dirty dancing at school dances -- "a dance form called 'grinding'". Wow. We feel like this story was written at least 10 years too late. Also... when did high schoolers start dressing like that? Add a comment

Marchand-Bergeron-Recchi Dominate. Bruins Win!

Written by Jon and Robb on .

Umm wow.  So remember back when we were complaining about the Bruins offense? Well lately we've needed to find new things to bitch about (we're looking at you Horton).

A solid game and solid victory for the Bruins against a team that is much better than they looked today.  The Marchand-Bergeron- Recchi line continues to impress and Thomas was as good as he has been all season.  We could keep going, but I think that this expresses how we feel more than words can:
