Game Day: Bruins vs. Maple Leafs -- The 'This is awkward' game

Written by Justin on .

Boston Bruins at Toronto Maple Leafs 4/4/10

Bruins are on a two game winning streak. Big win in the Filth and then a dominating performance against the Lightning. Even Tim Thomas got a point against Tampa. Marc Savard is back in action. Things are starting to look good in Boston.

Things aren't so hot in Toronto's Toyland, though. They got completely owned by the Oilers on Thursday. Fans and media are calling for Ron Wilson's job. Just go to Pension Plan Puppets and look at the front-page headlines -- that pretty much sums things up for the Blue & White.

Another Top 3 draft pick looks to be in the Bruins future if this keeps up. Bs looking to help out their own cause there tonight.

Really, this match-up could be one of those awkward "bumping into your ex moments." Leafs brass seeing Tuukka Rask in net (potentially -- he always brings his A-game against the Leafs) and Tyler Seguin take the ice and playing well; Kessel hitting the ice and disappearing like Houdini for what could be like the 100th straight time against Boston.

Patrice Purrgeron caught this moment in Toronto this morning. Awkward.

Awkward Phil Kessel, Tyler Seguin momentWho knew it was so warm in December up there?

Speaking of Kessel.

We're kinda hoping Maple Leaf fans, in a fit of frustration, start this chant tonight. That'd be win.

After the jump... stupid stat of the day... some of our favorite Phil Kessel pictures... Tuukka Rask Meltdown Update watch... projected roster... game day links... and your game day video...

Bruins Visit Red Light District, Kill Lightning

Written by Jon on .

Savard

Today was a huge night for the Bruins. The type of victory that could turn into a loooooong streak. Coming off a good victory against the Flyers, the Bruins gave the home fans a party.

Marc Savard returned and the Bruins celebrated in grand style. They forgot they played hockey and scored a touchdown. Then gave Tampa Bay the finger and went for the two point conversion. They drove one Lightning goalie from the net and embarrassed the other. They held Stamkos pointless. They held St. Louis pointless.

Savard played a great game too. He really did. Not just being nice because it was his first game back. He threw a hit. He drove to the front of the net looking for tip ins. He had some great takeaways. If you knew nothing about Savard, no way you would've know he had not played a game since May.

The Bruins put Tampa Bay on their heels and then slit their throats. They smelled blood and wanted the kill. And boy did they get it. Tampa Bay is certainly a better team than they showed tonight but the Bruins were just on fire. And Mike Smith kind of sucks. Only seven Bruins players didn't register a point. Not only was Thomas spectacular again, but he got an assist. They got amped up for the Flyers game and carried that emotion home.

I mean, just look at this freaking boxscore!

After the jump, goals, goals, goals and paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaain.....

Sturmy and his Troopers head west

Written by Justin on .

Marco Sturm traded to LA KingsWe've been waiting since June to use this picture... it really is just gross.

Editor's note: The same sources that said this was a done deal are now saying it's on hold (at best) or dead (at worse). Someone must've told LA Sturm had two knee surgeries. Here's our original post. More on what the hell is going on when someone finally knows.

We know this is basically old news since it broke in the early afternoon by TSN.ca but we have day jobs and already had this cinematic masterpiece lined up in the queue right at the time when everyone started freaking out over the Sturm trade.

The deal is pretty simple: Kings get Marco "Sturmface" Sturm. Bruins get a conditional pick and, more importantly, dodge any more cap issues for the time being. This all pending Sturm can get he knees passed the TSA agents and into California to pass his physical. This is a mere formality -- minus the TSA frisk-down.

It's a good move by the Chiarelli. Sturm is over-the-hill in terms of hockey age and two blown knees in the last two years doesn't make him a very promising player. When your main asset is speed and you have two knee surgeries, things aren't looking up.

The big mystery is how they got Sturm to waive his No Trade Clause.

It's quite possible the Bruins informed Sturm in recent days that he might be assigned to Providence (AHL). Such type of speculation has a way of, shall we say, convincing players to waive their ''No Trade'' clauses.--KPD, Boston.com

That would probably do it.

Michael Ryder and Blake Wheeler can now sigh in relief since the Bruins are under the cap ceiling. They can also start having dinner with Shawn Thornton again. We'd be surprised if any more moves came out of this.

Some people think the Bruins could've gotten more for Sturm - like a prospect defenseman or a third-round pick. Those people are idiots. Don't listen to them.

Sturm was the last piece of the Joe Thornton trade. Umm... yea. Go... us?

Sturm will be remembered, not just for his bad knees, but because of this:

We send you off, Sturmy, the only way we know how... with a song from the Village People.

Best of luck in LA, Sturm.

Savard's Gonna Need a Montage!

Written by Jon on .

savardsticktraining
Patrice Purrgeron helped Savard get back in shape...

Since March 7th, 2010 when an elbow struck his cranium, Marc Savard's life has been hell. Headaches. Depression. The thought that his career, his livelihood was at stake.

Every morning he woke up not feeling any better, he had to deal with the thought he may never play hockey again. Hockey players train their whole lives to play in the NHL, and Savard is no different. But for months, he had to think about how he may never get to do the one thing he loves the most again. And that just made his situation even worse.

Many thought he'd make a return against the Sabres, but instead Savard made his dramatic return in Game 1 one the Flyers series, scoring the game winning goal in overtime on home ice. But he wasn't healthy. He shouldn't have been on the ice. He just didn't want to admit it.

The last time Savard took the ice in a game situation was the infamous Game 7 against Philly, and the more infamous "Too Many Men on the Ice" penalty where Savard appeared to call for a line change and then change direction and go back on the ice.

As training camp neared, the rumors began to pop up that perhaps Savard was still suffering effects from his concussion. Unfortunately for the Bruins and Savard, the rumors were true. He has watched the ups and downs of his team this season, wanting nothing more than to get on the ice and help them.

But what could he do? Then... he found the one thing he needed to get back on the ice...

After the jump, there's only thing thing that could help Savard get back... he just needed a montage....

Game Day: The Bolts vs. Bruins -- Can lightning strike twice for Thomas?

Written by Justin on .

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Boston Bruins 12/2/10

We're not apologizing for the headline pun. Tim Thomas rocked your face last night. Admit it.

What a stud. Looks like he'll get the call again tonight as well.

If you missed it, we can't do simple things like spelling.

TimThomasSnowAngelDuh... we spell gooooood.

Whatever. Thomas was a beast last night and we were too busy cleaning off our pants to worry about proofreading our Photoshops.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are in town. Last time these two teams met the Bruins showed up just in time to make sure they didn't get shut out. Zeus Stamkos was smiting the Bs.

Game Recap: Bruins Beat Philly, We Love Thomas

Written by Robb on .

bsflyersfinal

A game where the Bruins gave a full 60 minute effort and managed to put up enough points to win against a good team?? Is this the beginging of the season or are we dreaming??  Well after checking our calender and pinching ourselves a few times, we realized that no, Boston just genuinely played well.

Oh yeah, and that Tim Thomas guy is pretty good! He spent a good amount of the game denying Hartnell, but more on that later.

Speaking of Hartnell, we wanted to come up with a picture to put here and mock him, but Google did it for us!  This isn't photoshopped.  Google Image "Scott Hartnell" and check out page two.  You should see something like this:

HartnellGay

"Gay Called...It's For You" -- bwah?

The game started out with a recap of last years playoff series.  Thanks NESN, we hadn't had that shoved in our faces enough the past few days.  Aside from the win, the best part of the ending of this game is that the talk of the playoffs will end for now at least.  As awful as it was, it's being treated more like a literal massacre and less like a hockey game.

Game Day: Bruins vs. Filthadelphia - Where everyone reminds you of 5/14/10

Written by Justin on .

Boston Bruins vs. Philladelphia Flyers 12/1/10

Guess what, everybody!? The Bruins had an epic collapse against the Flyers last year. Did you know that? Did you!? DID YOU!? 'Cause every scmhuck with a computer is making sure you do.

Plan on watching this game on mute.

Real story is the fact that the Bruins are 1-3-1 in last five games; Flyers are 3-0-2. Fuck what happened last year. Bruins need to win not to exact some self-inflicted revenge but because they need to right the boat. Savard's return is right around the corner but fans and players can't expect him to be a messiah by any means. He'll help... but he's only one man.

Apathetic Boston
We're also extremely disappointed in the apathy of Boston Bruins fans to the NHL All-Star Game.

2010 NHL All-Star Game voting status

How is Bobrovksy ahead of Tim Thomas? Bobrovsky is a write in. Pathetic.

It should also be noted that Richards, Briere, Giroux, Carter are all leading in the NHL voting for forwards. There's not a single Bruin on that list. For defense, Pronger and Timonem appear before Chara. Their individual vote totals double Chara's. *Vomit*

Hell, even Flyer fans are surprised that Briere is on the leaderboard.

After the jump, we look back at some of our favorite Filthadelphia Flyers photoshops... aka, if you hate Carcillo, get ready... and yes, we know he's not going to play tonight.

Hunwick Gone as Cap Moves Begin

Written by Jon on .

matty

Call it a message. Call it the start of a shake-up. Call it a cap clearing move (this is the most likely scenario).

Whatever it is, Matt Hunwick is now a member of the Colorado Avalanche in return for prospect and former Boston University defenseman Colby Cohen, who will report directly to the Providence Bruins.

The $1.45 million that GM Peter Chiarelli cleared by trading Hunwick is enough to move Marc Savard back into the line-up, with the trade an indication Savard is just about ready.

We're neutral on the trade. We're not trying to cop out here, but we weren't big Hunwick fans but we didn't hate him either. He certainly hasn't been impressive this year but had picked up his game a little recently.

hunwickjoemac

A lot of Hunwick defenders immediately jumped in and threw around the "puck moving defenseman" tag and talked about how the Bruins were going to miss that. Not sure which games everyone has been watching this season, but Hunwick hasn't exactly done a stellar job of that so far. Bruins have won nothing with Hunwick, so his loss isn't exactly terrible. If the move was intended to send any sort of message, would've been better to trade one of many underperforming vets.

Hey whatever.

After the jump, we go to Twitter to see what the masses think of the Hunwick trade....

Tuukka Rask Meltdown Watch

Written by Jon on .

For the forseeable future you will see a new feature around Days of Y'Orr, particularly in our Previews and Recaps when Rask plays/starts.

Our dear, dear Tuukka Rask is 1-6-1 on the season, a record that does not reflect his level of play. Just look at his .926 save percentage and you'll see Rask has been no slouch this season.

raskstats

We're used to seeing Two U's, Two K's, Two Points. This year he's been lucky if his team plays well for even 10 minutes in front of him.

Does he team hate him? Do they want him to explode? Do they enjoy seeing him suffer?

Throughout the season Rask has talked about how he's happy Thomas is doing so well and that he knows it's just bad luck that he hasn't been as successful as he'd like. He's never once come out and bashed his teammates or their effort. He just smiles and says his time will come.

But look into his eyes. You can see the anger burning. He is but a man! No man can continue to take what Rask has been forced to deal with and not explode!

Eventually... milk crates all across Boston are going to pay.

So we're starting the "Tuukka Rask Meltdown Watch", a simple meter that shows how close he is to totally flipping out and tossing milk crates onto the ice, into the crowd, at his defensemen, etc. We're not implying Rask has anger issues, we're simply saying that he has to be reaching his limits. How can he not be?!

Even his fantasy stock is plummeting! Poor guy.

raskfantasy

As you can see, the meter has five stages. Today we're being generous and saying Rask is starting to get irritated, but hasn't completely gone bat shit crazy yet. The Days of Y'Orr computers will continue to monitor Rask's temperment and keep you, the fans, updated and let you know if you need to take cover. Enjoy.

The Bear returns: Respect the jersey

Written by Justin on .

Boston Bruins Bear commercial: Respect the Jersey

We're finally back after pigging out with family and friends... hence the lack of game previews and lame recaps for the last two games. But to be the fair, we still put more effort in than the Bruins.

It looks like the Boston Bruins are at it again with their Bruins Rules commercials.

We're slightly grossed out by the look of the jersey. But well played, Bear. Well played.

We're also glad the Bruins are quick to leave the abomination that is the fan-created rule contest with this one and the Don't Disrespect the Garden vid.
