Grindin' Gears: Calling For Julien's Head Edition

Written by Greg on .

GGI've tried to be on the fence about this topic. In fact I believe I've used the phrase "Let's wait and see how this plays out" on a number of occasions, but I can't do it anymore. I have to show my true colors from here on out. I am officially on the "Fire Claude Julien" bandwagon. I've had it up to here and "here" is being at the tippity top of my 6'2" frame. There's a number of people that have stated that if Claude Julien's Bruins gets out of the second round, he should keep his job. I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. It's time for Julien to take his act somewhere else.

One of my biggest concerns when Julien was hired to coach the Bruins was that he was fired 79 games into the 2006-2007 season with the Devils. Normally when a coach is fired it is because the team is not performing well, but the Devils were in second place in the Eastern Conference with 107 points. The reason Julien was fired from New Jersey? Well Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said it was a "lack of readiness to challenge for a Stanley Cup."

Well you don't say.

After the jump, more Anti-Julien goodness!...

Game Day Preview: Bruins vs The Lesser NY Team

Written by Robb on .

Oh happy day!  Word is that Thornton will be playing tonight, how we've missed him so.  Obviously we can't fault the guy for sitting out a couple games after getting forty stitches, he probably didn't want to be seen wearing a visor.  Whatever the reason, we're just glad that he could be coming back tonight with that badass cut over his eye.

Originally, Ryder's face was going to be on Leia's body, but...*shudders*

The Islanders tonight, hoping this effort against a New York team is a more complete one than Monday night's debacle.

Round Table: Michael Ryder or Tyler Seguin

Written by Days Of Y'Orr on .

round tableWelcome to the Days of Y'Orr Round Table discussion. This is a new, semi-regular feature we're going to try out in which the DOY crew discuss important -- and sometimes trivial -- matters of hockey.

This second edition of the DOY Round Table debates who deserves the third line winger spot in the playoffs, Michael Ryder or Tyler Seguin. If you haven't read our first round table discussion, which talked about Marc Savard retiring, you can do so here.

Greg
: I don't think there is much of a debate here. When you look at the season of a whole, Michael Ryder does not stand out as a great player. In fact, his production has been inconsistent since he's been part of the Bruins organization. In 2008-2009, Ryder scored 27 goals and had 26 assists (53 points) in the regular season. In 2009-2010 he had 18 goals and 15 assists (33 points [in 82 games!]) and in 2010-2011 he has 18 goals and 22 assists (40 points) with four games left. Nothing really impresses me about those numbers, especially when you're paying a guy $4M a year to score goals. I could see if Ryder was good defensively, but he's not. He's a goal scorer who scored 20+ goals ONCE in three years.

There's also a stat being throw around that Michael Ryder is a "clutch" playoff performer because he has scored 18 points in 24 games for the Bruins in the playoffs. In 2008-2009, when Boston was the top seed in the Eastern Conference, Michael Ryder had 5 goals and 8 assists in 11 games which is what he expect from him. Here's the issue that comes up from here on out. For the next 13 games, Ryder has 5 points. So in the 2009-2010 playoffs, Ryder had 4 goals and 1 assist in those 13 games. If you find yourself sitting there saying "Well four goals is pretty good right?" Wrong. Ryder scored 2 goals in the first round against Buffalo (Game 2 in Buffalo) and was virtually invisible the rest of the series. Against Philly, Ryder scored in Game 4 and again in Game 7. Also, it should be noted this was when Ryder was a top 6 winger for the Bruins.

All I'm saying is that Ryder's playoff stats and "experience" is vastly overblown. With his ability to coast through games, his lack of defense and his lack of scoring goals despite being labeled a "goal scorer" - Ryder needs to find a seat for these playoffs. Seguin, through all the bullshit Claude has put him through (including 8 minutes of ice time against the Rangers), has shown flashes of brilliance. I throughouly believe that if Seguin was on the second line with Bergeron and Recchi, instead of dwelling on the fourth line for most of the year, he'd have 60+ points. If you're going to try and develop a rookie you need to let him take his bumps, even in the playoffs. Ryder doesn't bring much to the table and he's set in his ways; Seguin is learning. Answer: Tyler Seguin.

Justin: Our distaste for Ryder is well known to anyone who's read this blog. I personally keep hoping he'll prove my gripes wrong and yet, he never seems to. At the moment a lot of fans want to jerk Ryder off because his game winning penalty shot secured Boston as the Northeast Division winners. It was also the first successful penalty shot at the Garden like a billion years, mostly because Marco Sturm couldn't hit the broadside of the barn on his penalty shot attempts. It's also the first thing Ryder has done in ages.

There is something to be sad about having experience in the playoffs but experience doesn't mean jack if the player with the experience sucks. Ryder has 40 points and is a -4 for Boston this year. Seguin is a -3 with 22 points. Stats are slightly in Ryder's favor but so is the ice time. Expectations are a lot higher with a veteran than a rookie. Ryder seems to disappear for weeks at a time we often wonder if he even suits up most nights. As of late, it looks like Seguin has picked up his game. I'd love to seem him get some experience in the  big games and see how he reacts.

I'm really on the fence about who to start. I'd love to see Seguin get some playoff ice time and experience. I'd love to see how he reacts. But at the moment Ryder is on a two-game point "streak" and if he keeps up the scoring pace Julien will most certainly go with him to start the playoffs. What will probably happen is CJ will go with whoever's playing best and bench whoever's not doing well... and by that I mean he'll bench Seguin a the first sign of trouble and take too long to give Rydes the hook.

So I vote Seguin, but if Ryder continues to score you gotta go with the hot hand. Answer: Tyler Seguin

seguin

Jon: Before Ryder's penalty shot goal against Atlanta he had not scored in thirteen games. He admitted to coasting in the playoffs last year and his play during the regular season does little to indicate anything will be different this year.

People keeping saying "oh well Ryder has scored 18 points in 24 playoff games with the Bruins and has more experience!" Thirteen of those points came in the 2009 playoffs when the Bruins were ruining the Canadiens before deciding not to play against the Hurricanes. Seven of his thirteen points came in the four game sweep of the Canadiens when the entire team was on fire. And experience means nothing if you just coast and show zero effort. I'm not sold on the experience argument when it comes to Ryder.

Seguin is young and inexperienced, sure. The playoffs will be unlike anything he has ever experience. But he is young and hungry. He hasn't scored a point in his last 9 games but the desire and effort is there and that is more than you can say for Ryder. If I have to choose between a guy who has more playoff points and more experience but shows no effort or a guy who has no experience but has shown a lot of determination heading into the playoffs, I want the high effort guy every time over someone like Ryder.

In the end, if Seguin isn't working out you can always make a change. It really isn't that hard. Seguin's ice time is obviously going to be micromanaged heavily by Julien and the coaching staff so if he's not up to par he'll take a seat. But Seguin gives the Bruins more upside. His efforts will pay off if he keeps playing as hard as he has been. Answer: Tyler Seguin

123sguinRobb: Seguin has done the best he could with what he's had to work with this season.  He averages just about 12:11 of ice time a game, and has more points than any other players in the NHL with comparable time and is among the highest in SOG as well.  Even taking stats out of the picture, the kid has show flashes of downright brilliance at points over the season.  You can make the argument about his inexperience, but I can't see a rookie with his skill level not elevating his play even more during his first chance to play in the NHL playoffs.

I think more people were surprised than they were excited when Ryder got the penalty shot goal against Atlanta last thursday, and with good reason,  no one trusts him.  Why should we? He's given us no reason to trust him since the 08-09 season.  Despite what any statistics may say, he's not someone we're going to want to have in clutch situations.  Experience, schmxperiance, the Bruins have plenty of that.  Sorry to any Ryder sympathizers (I used to be one myself), but I'd rather see Seguin in there. Answer: Tyler Seguin

You've heard from us now we want to hear from you. Who do you want in that third line wing spot, Seguin or Ryder?

Game Recap: Bruins @ New York Rangers

"I wish you would step out from that ledge my friend..." - Third Eye Blind

That has to be the mantra of the Bruins fan this morning after Boston blew a three goal lead and induced Post Traumatic Stress Syndrom onto a city. You know what I'm talking about. Don't tell me that last night's game didn't conjure up thoughts of the Bruins/Flyers series from the playoffs, specifically Game 7 where Boston choked away a 3 goal lead. I know that it is tough to bring up and live through, but we have to. Last night's game was a virtual mirror image of the Bruins collapse to the Flyers. Instead of doing a normal game recap, I'm going to break this game down in two sections. The first section will be known as Act 1 and the second will be known as Act 2. Without further aideu, I present to you:

After the jump, let's look at Bruins vs. Ranger: A Broadway Tale...

Game Day Preview: Boston @ New York Rangers

Written by Greg on .

bos@ny
Ah it's April, the NHL season is winding down and the snow is falling on the ground in Massachusetts. Wait, what? Snow? Oh yeah. On April 1, the Boston area got about 5-6 inches of snow. Nothing crazy, but also nothing anyone wanted (except maybe the crazies). The good news, the weekend was "warm" and most of the snow melted. The other good news? Michael Ryder was actually useful for once and helped lock up the Northeast Division for the Bruins, ensuring the team does no worse than third place in the Eastern Conference.

Tonight, the Bruins face a desperate New York Rangers team that sits in eighth with 89 points and has Carolina in their rear-view mirror with 87 points. In fact, seeds 6-9 are still up for grabs. Montreal has 91 points, Buffalo has 90, New York has 89 and Carolina has 87. The Bruins are 5-2 in their last seven games with quality wins over Philadelphia, Chicago and Montreal. The two losses? A 1-0 loss to New York and a 4-3 overtime loss to the Leafs. The first loss (being the Rangers) is more important than the loss to Toronto because there is a possibility that Boston will see New York in the first round.

I'll be honest, seeing the Rangers in the first round scares the shit out of me. Why? One man: Henrik Lundqvist.

Boston has the hardest time trying to solve Lundqvist. In three games this season, Henrik is 2-1 with a 1.66 GAA, a save percentage of .931 and a shutout. Wow. I guess there's a reason the New York "faithful" call him King Henrik. The guy is a stud and should be in the Vezina talk, but we all know Thomas is going to win it.

Speaking of Thomas, who gets the start tonight? With four gamers left how should the goaltending situation be handled? Should Thomas play three out of the four? Should Tuukka play three out of the four so Timmy gets rest? Should the Bruins split the four games between the two goaltenders? It's an interesting debate that can be made. Personally, I'd like the see the Bruins split the last four games evenly, giving both goalies two games and ample time to rest for Thomas. I would start Thomas in New York and then again in New Jersey, to shake the rust off after a five day rest. Let Tuukka play against the Islanders and Senators and (hopefully) finish the season off on a high note.

Recap: Bruins clinch Northeast Division Title, Win 3-2

Written by Justin on .

What a weird ass game. Bruins were fighting the puck all game. Rask, defensemen, forwards. Everyone. Ryder, Paille and Recchi were your Bruins goal scorers. They didn't look sharp for more than a minute or two at a time. Luckily they were facing Atlanta and didn't need to be super sharp.

Bruins just need one point to clinch the NE Division. They got two. Bruins are undefeated in April.

Surprised that Atlanta didn't show more heart when a loss knocked them out of the playoffs. Lame.

Huge exaggeration by the Associated Press. You'd think Ryder took the team on his back this season by this headline.

Game Day: Thrashers vs. Bruins -- Return of the Sheriff

Written by Justin on .

Atlanta thrashers vs. Boston Bruins
Matinee games kinda suck. Love the idea fo rolling out of bed and heading to the rink to watch some hockey and then still have plenty of time to do other things afterwards, but it sucks rolling out of bed at 10am and then have to rush a game preview so people can actually see it before heading into the Garden.

We know. Boo-hoo us. Call the Wahbulance. We're being bitches this morning.

Also Bruins are like 1-500000 this year during matinee games.

Big story for today's game is the return of Blake "Offsides" Wheeler and Mark Stuart -- half of the Bruins' American squad.

Today should also be the official return of The Sheriff.

We think people are more excited for Hnidy than locking up the Northeast Division.

Bruins also are giving out the 7th Player Award today. We think it's a race between Marchand and Campbell. Soup might deserve it more for being one of the most consistent (and undervalued) players but Marchand probably has a bit more of an edge with votes.

Bruins drop another SO to Leafs

Written by Justin & Jon on .

Not sure what to say about this game. Bruins could've clinched the division with a win but instead decided to keep the Leafs playoff hopes a live a little bit longer. Maybe that was the plan. Who knows.

Lots of sensitive people are making a big deal over the whole Marchand golf swing incident. Get a life. Players are swearing and dropping mom jokes after every whistle, but a golf swing to the bench has everyone shitting themselves.

Also, we were a bit shocked that Tuukka didn't start last night. With playoffs already settled, you'd think Julien would want to get a little bit more rest for Thomas and get some reps in for Rask.

After the jump... the full recap...

Shawn Thornton wears visor.. APRIL FOOLS! Wait, what?

Written by Justin on .

Thanks to an unfortunate incident, the third greatest NHL player of all time got a nasty cut over his right eye. This just makes him look more like a BA.

Then some douchenozzle said some stuff. We're still wondering why the Chicago newspaper would interview some homeless person off the streets about the whole incident. Slow newsday.

We weren't overly worried about Twos. Guy's a stud.

But then some odd photos surfaced via Bish and Naoko of Shawn Thornton wearing a visor (see above).

Clearly this image has either 1) been altered  or 2) not really Thornton. That could be anyone wearing a helmet and visor. Where's his face!? That could be Mark Recchi for all we know.

Another photo then appeared of "Shawn Thornton" wearing a visor. Horseshit. Next thing they'll tell us is that Bigfoot was in attendance.

Oh....nevermind then.
