RECAP: Not Close to Pretty But Two Points is Two Points. BRUINS WIN!

Written by Justin on .

Bruins deeeat Senators 2-1

Before the game Patrice Bergern said the team needed to play with desperation, so one would expect the team to come out flying like goddamn rockeys and peppering Lehner with shots, right? Nope. Team came out with sleeping bags, popcorn and a chickflick and packed it in for the first two periods. Awful.

Luckily for Boston Khudobin was dressed for the occasion and kept the team in the game until Danny Paille tied the game up. And then, of course, Seids slapped his first goal of the year home for the game winner. We're happy Boston found a way to win and get two points but damn was it a shitty performance again. It really feels like we've only seen Boston play at it's best twice this year. Not sure if this is a good thing that they're record is so impressive with lackluster performances or bad thing 'cause they just can't find a way to string several A+ games in a row. We'll find out come playoff time.

Raptor Jesus Rich Peverley was a healthy scratch last night. Nice to see Claude Julien finally put the boot to ass on some of these guys but when does Horton and Lucic get a healthy scratch? They've been just as awful as Peverley this season.

David Krejci also came back into the line-up last night to the relief of Bruins fans. He looked fantastic for a man on one leg. Horton and Looch, once again, disappeared.

Despite that Boston steals two points from the Sens.

PREVIEW 29: Boston Bruins at Ottawa Senators. Go Home Senators, You're Ottawa

Written by Greg Ezell on .

Boston vs. Ottawa

The Ottawa Senators won't go away and it is really fucking irritating. They're like the Bruins herpes infection, they always hang back and hang back and crop up at the worst time. There's nothing you can do to send them away either. No medication will take care of it, no amount of injury will send them off and they're currently in prime position to strike down a Bruins team that is mentally soft.

Yeah, you heard me right. This team is mentally soft. They're softer than a sneaker full of baby shit. I find it amazing that a team like Ottawa can battle through injuries with some key guys outs (Karlsson, Spezza, Anderson) but Chris Kelly (LOL) and David Krejci go down and suddenly it's a sinking ship. Oh no, we lost a replacable third liner and a real second line center how are we ever going to get out of this?

poopshoe

The real issue is the defense and all year it's been the defense. Not a third line winger, not a scoring winger - the defense. The Bruins defense is suddenly a shell of what it has been in the previous years. Johnny Boychuk, Andrew Ference and Adam McQuaid have been terrible, but you don't expect McQuaid to be a suepr defenseman because he's a third pairing. Ference and Boychuk are different. Boychuk is getting paid like a number 2 defenseman, but he's playing like a number 5 defenseman.

I think this is also a great point to bring up how bad Peter Chiarelli has handled re-signing guys. I feel like he's overpaid a lot of players (Lucic, Krejci, Boychuk, Kelly, Peverley) and they haven't produced. You already know my feelings on Lucic, but tthe same rings true for Boychuk and Krejci. Has he hit on a few? Of course. Marchand is a steal right now, but based on PC's track record - Marchand will sign a 4 year, $28M contract in the offseason and then regress.

It's frustrating because now you have morons saying that the Bruins are losing third period leads because of Tuukka Rask. You actually have people saying that he shouldn't be the starter or that they should wait and re-sign him in the offseason because he can't "make the timely save". Claude said that, Claude actually said "we didn't get timely saves" in his press conference.

Is this guy for real?

Yeah, you know what I hate? When a team makes a trade for an unreal goalie, backs him up for a few years and then he posts stats like this:

rask

Oh that's right, he just doesn't make a timely save because Winnipeg is ripping shots and spending the latter half of the third period in Boston's own end. I wrote a piece earlier in the year about the Bruins defense and how they've left their goaltenders out to dry and they're doing it again. It started two weeks ago in Pittsburgh when Boston blew a 2-0 lead. Then, 5 days later, they looked like a bunch of monkeys set on fire during the last 90 seconds of a 2-1 Pittsburgh game (a game where Claude had the Merlot line out there with 1:30 left) and then Tuesday night in Winnipeg they gave up three straight goals in the third period.

The issue is that Boston grabs a lead and collapses. They pack it in and then play a prevent style in hopes of getting the puck out of their zone, but they never can. Playing a prevent style defense prevents you from winning. Can we see this team put the medal on the gas and finally end a team like they did against Philadelphia and Washington? Two fucking scrub hockey teams.

I understand the schedule has something to do with it, but when you start blaming everything on the schedule you're the Red Sox.

As for this hockey game, you know what you're getting with the Senators at this point. They aren't going away and they are only a few points behind you for 4th place in the Eastern Conference. Another rough thing about Ottawa? Robin Lehner absolutely owns the Bruins. In 2 games played this season, Lehner is 0-0-2 but he has a GAA of 1.87 and a SV% of .951. Those are some pretty good numbers against a good hockey team.

Darth Quaider out 3-4 weeks

Written by Justin on .

Adam McQuaid

We knew injuries in a condensed schedule like this was bound to happen but damn does it suck when it comes all at once. First Chris Kelly went down with a busted tibia, then David Krejci almost got a puck-sized hole blown through his knee. And then last night we saw Adam McQuaid go head first into the boards... again. Happens twice a year. Now it's being reported that he's out 3-4 weeks with a strained shoulder:

"Adam sustained a shoulder strain and will return to Boston for further evaluation by the Bruins medical staff. It is anticipated that he may be out 3-4 weeks."

McQuaid has skated in 25 games this season and has registered one goal and three assists with 49 penalty minutes.

Sounds more like a dislocated shoulder than a strained shoulder but whatevs. This sucks 'cause Boston's defense has been un-Boston like this season and now there's a chence Ference will be teamed up with *gulp* Aaron Johnson. Yikes.

 From CSNNE:

A Bruins spokesman said there was no immediate corresponding move to bring a defenseman up from the Providence Bruins.

So that means Boston extra defenseman Aaron Johnson will get back into the Bruins lineup after playing last week when McQuaid missed a game with an upper body issue. That appearance snapped 19 straight games as a healthy scratch for Johnson, a nine-year NHL veteran who brings good ability in the defensive zone to the table.

Nineteen games of rust. Oh boy. Could a trade be in Boston's future, though? From Boston.com:

McQuaid’s injury underscores the need to acquire defensive depth via the trade market prior to the April 3 deadline.

Yep. Chia needs a shutdown d-man and another offensive scorer (or two). Chiarelli's usually realy conservative at the trade deadline but with these injuries and holes it'll be interesting to see what he does.

RECAP: Blow Lead in the Third? It's Called Bruins. Bruins Lose.

Written by Justin on .

Bruins Jets March 19 score

Yikes.

Yikes.

Yikes.

Bruins lose three on the road for first time this season and have done it by blowing leads in the third period. Like we said, yikes.

At the moment the Bruins have no killer instinct when they get the lead. There's no putting teams out of their misery. At the moment the Bruins are getting leads and sitting on them like a mother hen waiting for her chicks to hatch. You can't do that in the NHL. You can't let teams just hang around. You gotta stomp them out as quick as possible. Then again it's hard to press the skate to the neck when only one line can score consistenly.

Right now the Bruins are operating with one good offensive line, one checking/energy line, and two clouds. And the defense are turning pucks over in all three zones. Hard to win games and score more goals when you're constantly having to chase down pucks your defenders are hanging over.

As for last night, Winnipeg looked like the hungier team as the game went on. Bruins were content with their one, flukey bounce goal while the Jets weren't going to accept a loss. Bruins were more than willing to accept another loss.

Remember when the third period was the Bruins period? We don't. It hasn't been in for at least a month now.

PREVIEW 28: Bruins vs. Jets -- The Return of Spoonman

Written by Justin on .

Bruins vs. Jets March 2013

The Bruins are in the frigid tundra that is Winnipeg to face the Jets tonight, not that it's warm and sunny here in Boston either. Spring? Never heard of it.

Boston will 99.9% most likley go without David Krejci today. He's listed DTD with what we're assuming is just a sweet bruise on his knee. The team yesterday said there's no busted bones so that's a relief for the team and fans. In Krejci's place will be Ryan Spooner, both on the roster and on the lines:

Only other feasible alternative we can think of would be to put Peverley on the first line C and let Spooner play with Caron and Pandolfo on the third. But letting Spooner loose with Horton and Lucic should be interesting. Horton has looked real hungry for goals the last few games and Spooner's still looking to register his first NHL point. Against the Jets, that's a good chance he could do it.

Someone suggested Seguin-Caron-Spooner on a line and we're not even sure why anyone would want to blow up the best line in the NHL. But whatevs. You do what you do in NHL13.

Ryan Spooner Boston Bruins

Spooner was also practicing on the power play soooo there's that.

Also for those wondering, Soderberg's team is leading the series 2-1.

Bruins Dodge a Bullet. Krejci listed DTD

Written by Justin on .

David Krejci knee injury Boychuk

Boston Bruins getting lucky with this one. It appears Krejci doesn't have any broken bones, and is being listed as DTD.

Sounds like he'll have a really nice bruise for the next couple of weeks. Destroychuk put all of his superhuman strength into this shot.

From WEEI:

Following the practice, Bruins coach Claude Julien told reporters that Krejci is “day-to-day,” and he did not indicate whether or not the first-line center would be able to play Tuesday against the Jets. Julien added that the B’s could potentially call a player up from Providence if Krejci isn’t ready to go.

Krejci’s entire line did not skate Monday, as Milan Lucic and Nathan Horton also sat out. The group of players not practicing Monday consisted of Krejci, Lucic, Horton, Patrice BergeronBrad MarchandZdeno CharaDennis SeidenbergAndrew Ference and Boychuk.

Hope everyone who fell on their swords after the game yesterday have good health insurance.

RECAP: Boston Plays Tough but Outworked. Bruins Lose.

Written by Justin on .

Bruins vs. Penguins March 17

Rough loss for the Bruins in what can be looked as one of those "scheduled losses." Playing the Pens on the road on the tail end of back-to-back games twice in one week is awful scheduling by the NHL and just plain ol' tough titties for Boston. It was a hard played game by both sides. Not many mistakes were made but the ones that were cost the Bruins a potential point or two.

Julien said he wasn't disappointed with his team's efforts. We wished we saw stronger forechecking, more physical play by all four lines and a bit more sense of urgency against a Pens defense which is suspect at best and without Letang for most of the game. Didn't happen. Pens outworked Boston. Simple as that.

Where that's just two lost points the real loss may be that of David Krejci who took a Johnny Rocket right above the kneecap. He was helped off the ice but later seen walking onto the bus.

Bruins say he'll travel with the team. So did Kelly and we know how that turned out. After the game some fans were ready with pitchforks and torches to go hunt down Boychuk (probably not a smart idea, kiddies), and also assumed the worse because Boston and reasons. But let's wait until the team doctors figure out what's wrong before people jump on their own daggers, shall we?

Also that injury totally was a buzzkill. Destroyed the momentum the team was building on trying to tie the game up.
